Edmonton Lightning Soccer Club Illuminates the Pitch in the Inaugural Edmonton Futsal League Season

EDMONTON, AB
In the heart of Edmonton, a new force has emerged in the vibrant world of futsal—the Edmonton Lightning Soccer Club. As the inaugural season of the Edmonton Futsal League (EFL) kicks off, we caught up with Franco Imbrogno, the head coach of the Edmonton Lightning Soccer Club and also the head coach of the Concordia Thunder Female program, to gain insights into the club's involvement and his thoughts on the beautiful game of futsal.

A Nostalgic Affection for Futsal

"I have been a fan of futsal since we played it as kids, and I felt it would be a great option for our university program as an alternative to other offerings," Coach Franco Imbrogno shared. This sentiment of fondness for futsal, rooted in childhood memories, underscores the timeless appeal and universal love for the sport. The decision to integrate it into the university program reflects a forward-thinking approach to diversifying training methodologies.

Futsal's Impact on Player Development

Coach Imbrogno delves into the essence of futsal, stating, "Futsal creates an environment where there is little space and little time and develops the player's movement off the ball, skill development, and critical thinking skills." The acknowledgment of futsal's unique attributes, including the confined space and quick decision-making requirements, highlights its instrumental role in refining players' movement and cognitive abilities. Drawing inspiration from football legends like Messi, Ronaldo, and Pele, who attribute their success to futsal in their youth, Coach Imbrogno sees it as a positive influence for Canadian soccer.

Great Expectations for the Inaugural Season

"My expectations for the inaugural year are the hope that all players involved enjoy the game and that it creates an interest for other clubs/programs for future seasons," Coach Imbrogno expresses optimistically. Beyond the competitive aspect, the primary focus lies on fostering a love for the game among the players and sparking interest that transcends the inaugural season. The aspiration for broader community engagement showcases a commitment to the long-term growth and sustainability of futsal in the region.

Witnessing the Edmonton Lightning Soccer Club's embrace of futsal brings a sense of enthusiasm for the sport's evolution on Canadian soil. Coach Imbrogno's vision aligns with the global sentiment that futsal is more than just a game; it's a pathway to enhanced skills, strategic thinking, and a deep-rooted passion for the beautiful game.

Stay tuned as the Edmonton Lightning Soccer Club lights up the futsal pitch, aiming not only for victories but also for a lasting impact on the soccer landscape in Edmonton.
